Transfer News: Liverpool announce Sepp van den Berg loan to Preston North End in the Championship

Liverpool’s official club website has revealed that defender Sepp van den Berg has completed a loan transfer to Championship side, Preston North End.

The Dutch centre-back spent the second half of last season at Deepdale, where he featured 16 times. He moved to Preston in the same January transfer window with Ben Davies making his way to Anfield.

And the 19-year-old can now gear up for another season at the Championship side that finished 13th in their league last season. The Reds signed him from PEC Zwolle in the transfer window following their UEFA Champions League triumph in Madrid.

He is still a teenager so it is harsh to judge his spell at the club already. But in the two years he has spent at Anfield, he has featured just four times for Jurgen Klopp’s senior side.

Van den Berg loaned again

But the Dutchman is still in his formative years and playing time would be important for him to continue his development. That is why, a loan to Preston makes complete sense for the player as well as the club.

He would have struggled to get any gametime at Liverpool this season considering Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez would all return from their long-term injuries.

On top of that, the Reds have signed Ibrahima Konate, who would make up their defensive roster alongside the impressive Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams.

Van den Berg would hope that he is accorded similar trust in the Preston starting XI as he was last season under Frankie McAvoy. He was signed by the club for an initial £1.3million fee which would rise to £4.4million if he made 350 appearances for the Reds. (h/t Mirror)
