Transfer News: Liverpool and Atletico Madrid ‘agree’ on Saul Niguez move

As per a sensation report from Spanish publication La Razon via Anfield Central (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have reached a transfer agreement with Atletico Madrid for Saul Niguez.

However, the report adds that the Reds would need to offer slightly in excess of what Atletico “finally pays for Rodrigo de Paul, so Saúl Ñíguez could land at Anfield this summer.”

The Spanish central midfielder is one of Diego Simeone’s trusted men in the squad. Ever since returning from a loan spell from Rayo Vallecano in 2014, Saul has been a regular fixture in Atletico’s team.

But it looks like Liverpool have an opening to sign the Spain international in the summer. The Reds are on the lookout to replace Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield one way or the other- whether it’s by signing a new player or by looking within the current squad.

A potential Saul-ution to Wijnaldum predicament?

While Curtis Jones has shown glimpses of becoming a bright footballer under Jurgen Klopp, he is perhaps a little too young to shoulder Wijnaldum’s burden on his shoulders right now.

The Dutch midfielder did not renew his Reds contract and is off to PSG for next season. And Saul is one player that has the experience and ability to take over Gini’s position in Klopp’s midfield three.

Saul won the La Liga title with Atleti this year, playing an important role in their success alongside former Liverpool star, Luis Suarez. And at 26, he is arguably in the peak years of his career.

This seems like the best time to sign the Spaniard, if there was any, for Liverpool. It would be a statement of intent from the club as they look to get their hands on the Premier League trophy once again.
