Manchester United star Donny van de Beek admitted Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world
According to Liverpool Echo, Virgil van Djik has been named as the best defender in the world by Manchester United midfielder Donny Van de Beek.
The Man United star has admitted that his international teammate, Virgil van Djik, is the best centre-back in the world. The Dutch midfielder was denied a loan move to Everton on deadline day and since then, has only been featured on the bench for United’s first three games in the Premier League.
The Dutch midfielder, despite not being able to feature regularly for United, managed to keep his place in the Dutch team until an injury made him miss the 2020 Euros. Speaking with Man United legend Rio Ferdinand on his podcast Rio Presents Five (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Dutch midfielder opened about his plan for Manchester United and also agreed that Van Djik is the best centre back in the world
“Yeah. He’s really important for our team. We missed him in the Euros.”
“I’m happy for him that he’s back on the pitch. I know he worked really hard. It’s not easy if you get that injury, but he looked good.”
Van Dijk missed out on Euros 2020 as he was recovering from an ACL injury. Upon recovering, the Liverpool centre back has featured in the first team regularly. He has been paired up with Joe Matip, which is becoming a formidable partnership at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
Rio Ferdinand also admitted to Van de Beek’s claims of Van Djik being the best centre back in the world. The former United centre back highlighted consistency and ability to win in his praises for the Liverpool defender.
“I think it’s just consistency and ability to win. But Van Djik the way his form has been over the last three years, he has been immense.”
“Ruben Dias has been great but only played last season. I’m talking about consistency over a number of years and I think those guys are probably apart at the moment.”
