Why Chelsea are above Liverpool on the Premier League table

According to Liverpool Echo, even though Chelsea and Liverpool have identical records, the Blues are ahead of the Reds in the Premier League table due to alphabetical order.

The top 3 teams in the Premier League table are all tied at 13 points right now. Chelsea and Liverpool are in 1st and 2nd position respectively because of their superior goal difference to 3rd-placed Manchester United.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have a plus 11 goal difference in this PL campaign. They have scored 12 goals and conceded only 1 goal in their first 4 matches. That solitary goal conceded was at Anfield when both the teams played each other.

Kai Havertz headed the opener from a corner kick before Mohamed Salah equalized from the penalty spot following Reece James’ handball and subsequent sending off.

What happens if Liverpool and Chelsea end the season with identical records?

The Blues and the Reds have an identical record for the first 4 game weeks of this season. This begs us to wonder what happens if the same situation is carried throughout the campaign?

If such a situation were to occur then there would have to be a final playoff match between both clubs at a neutral venue.

The victor of that match would go on to lift the coveted Premier League trophy. And if it does happen, it would be the first time that the title is decided in such a way.

Chelsea vs Liverpool has been one of the most heated rivalries in England and are currently joint top on the Premier League table.
Chelsea vs Liverpool has been one of the most heated rivalries in England and are currently joint top on the Premier League table.

Both the teams have gotten off to a great start and are still unbeaten in this campaign. Liverpool came back from behind to win their first UCL game of 2020-21 with a 3-2 win against AC Milan. Chelsea also recorded a victory in their first Champions League game with a 1-0 scoreline.

The rivalry between these clubs has always been interesting to watch. It is already neck to neck after 4 games and things could heat up as the season progresses further.
