Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shares his thoughts about the Premier League title race after defeating Leeds United
In conversation after the match against Leeds United (h/t Mail +) [Subscription Required], Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp spoke about the importance of being on the front foot. He reiterated the fact that the Reds wouldn’t simply chase Manchester City and would take it one game at a time.
The Merseysiders put up an enthralling performance as they trashed the Whites with a 6-0 scoreline on the day. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with a penalty in the 15th minute and there was no looking back after that.
Joel Matip finally got his goal after those darting forward runs all season in the 30th minute with an amazing finish to put the ball past Illan Meslier. Virgil van Dijk also got himself on the scoresheet with Salah and Sadio Mane both scoring two goals each against the Peacocks.
This victory means that the Anfield outfit is now within touching distance of league leaders Man City. Despite the narrow margin between the Red and the Citizens, Klopp highlighted that his men would simply try and win all their remaining games in hand rather than trying to chase the Citizens.
Speaking after the fixture vs Leeds United (h/t Mail +), the German manager spoke about the need to go on the front foot and not think too much about playing catch up with the current PL leaders.
‘We go on the front foot, but honestly we don’t chase City. We try to win all the games, and the thing is now, we have the cup final at the weekend, and City play, I don’t know quite who, but they will probably win this game. Then it is six points again, before we play the next league game.’
Liverpool and their early prospects of silverware this season
The Merseysiders have started off this year in fine fashion. The Reds will play against Chelsea on Sunday in the EFL Cup final and could not have asked for better form going into the pivotal clash.
This match could help them get their hands on their first piece of silverware this season and provide a big boost heading towards the business end of the campaign. Liverpool struggled with a plethora of injuries last season but with the acquisition of players like Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz, the team seems much more adept to deal with a repeat of such an instance.
Thiago Alcantara is starting to maintain his fitness and getting a fair share of playing time and all the signs seem to be ominous at the moment. Liverpool would be hoping that they can carry this form with them to Wembley on Sunday.

This could also prove to be the kind of boost that the Merseysiders will require if they are to go toe to toe with Man City this season for the PL title. Klopp’s reaction after the match against Leeds said a lot about what he feels right now.
The German boss went in front of the Kop and did a few extra fist pumps to get the crowd going, almost communicating to them that he would need them to be at their best in the coming months. If we win all our games from here, we will end the season with 4 trophies. Easier said than done, though!
