Tony Cascarino backs Chelsea star Conor Gallagher to succeed at Liverpool
Speaking to talkSport (h/t Metro), former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino backs Blues starlet Conor Gallagher to be a rousing success at Liverpool- in case he ever joined the Reds.
The Cobham prospect has been sensational for Crystal Palace this season on loan from the Blues. The 22-year-old is considered one of the biggest prospects in English football and is expected to be a part of the first-team plans at Stamford Bridge next season.
Gallagher has chipped in with 8 goals and 5 assists in 30 games this season for Palace and has managed to impress Gareth Southgate, having now claimed a place in the England national team.
Cascarino believes that the Chelsea starlet is made for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and would benefit from playing just behind a front three of the quality that the Reds possess.
“Conor Gallagher is an outstanding attacking midfielder who always looks like he’s going to get a goal or make an assist. Liverpool, for me, if they had a player like that as well adding him behind their front three, with his ability to get goals.”
However, the former Blues striker conceded that it is highly unlikely that Thomas Tuchel decides to part with his prized asset, especially with a direct rival like Liverpool being involved. However, the Reds have managed to convince players like Dominic Solanke, Daniel Sturridge, and Victor Moses in the past to switch West London for Merseyside.
“Chelsea would never sell him to Liverpool, but they’d do really well with him.”
The unachievable target?
Like Cascarino claims, Conor Gallagher could be the perfect player for Liverpool. A hard worker off the ball, his abilities in possession make him a complete package in midfield for the Eagles.
However, as much as they could want him, it is always unlikely that Tuchel lets go of such a starlet so early on in his career. With N’Golo Kante and Jorginho entering their 30s, it would be surprising to see Chelsea part their way with a young and talented midfielder, that too with a rival involved.
It remains to be seen how Tuchel plans to reintegrate the talented midfielder into his already bloated squad but Gallagher looks like he’ll have a big future in Chelsea, following in the footsteps of Academy starlets such as Mason Mount and Trevoh Chalobah.

The Reds have enough midfielders in their squad as it is- the problem seems to be that they never seem to be fit and available for selection at the same time. With Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita, it is safe to say that our present and future is secured- at least to some extent- in the middle of the park.
