Darwin Nunez insists Benfica will come back stronger in the second leg against Liverpool
Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Benfica as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez has vowed to come back stronger and not go down without a fight in the second leg of the quarter-finals against Liverpool.
Nunez scored Benfica’s solitary goal in his side’s loss to the Premier League behemoths but that was not sufficient to get past the mighty Reds. The Uruguayan striker has been in superb form this season and continues to perform every week for Benfica.
The defeat in the hands of Klopp’s men means Benfica have a momentous task on their hands to overcome Liverpool and secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. However, that is easier said than done.
The job gets trickier for the Portuguese club considering they have to play at the cauldron of death, Anfield and try and overcome a high-flying Liverpool on their home turf.
Speaking about his side’s chances in the second leg, Nunez claims that his team will not go down without a fight. Benfica to their credit did put up a fight last night but they can also consider themselves lucky not to have lost by a bigger margin.
“Liverpool are a great team, but we are not afraid of them. We will work to get a good result in the second leg. I go home sad. Yes, we wanted more, but it was not possible. We are confident, this was demonstrated in the second half.”
A possible audition?
Nunez has scored 28 goals in 35 matches for Benfica this season and has been rightfully billed as one of the biggest prospects in the world. If his impressive form continues, it will not be surprising if the giants in Europe start circling the Uruguayan striker and Liverpool could be one of the possible suitors.
Nunez has a huge ceiling ahead of him and despite his vocal admission of wanting to win titles with Benfica, it is tough to see him stick around in Portugal for too long.
That said, the match at Anfield could turn out to be an audition for Darwin Nunez. The Benfica striker did no harm to his chances with his performance last night and if he manages to inspire the Portuguese club to the unthinkable a week later, Nunez would have a chapter written for him in history.

A crucial match awaits Jurgen Klopp’s men. It remains to be seen how Liverpool approaches the second leg given that they have one foot already in the semifinals.
