Gary Neville believes Liverpool are not feeling the title pressure following Newcastle win
It is a difficult time being a Manchester United supporter and Gary Neville encapsulates that with his assessment of the Premier League title race between Liverpool and Manchester City.
The two clubs have left the other teams in the top flight behind and are embroiled in a title race with little margin for error. With just a point separating them, it is still anyone’s to lose.
Liverpool went top following a 1-0 win away to Newcastle United on Saturday, putting the ball in Man City’s court. The Sky Blues responded to the challenge by thrashing a poor Leeds United side 4-0 to pip us to the summit.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast (h/t Sky Sports), Neville believes neither side are perturbed by the pressure and keep replying to each other in kind. The fact that Liverpool continues to see off teams despite still battling on all fronts is an incredible feat.
“When Liverpool have gone and done what they did at lunchtime today at Newcastle, after Villarreal in midweek and all the games they’ve had recently, you’re thinking that switches the pressure to City, but you never really get the impression that these two teams feel that pressure.”
The Reds made several changes to the side that defeated Villarreal last week. It is a testament to Klopp’s strength in depth that the team made short work of an in-form Newcastle side. With the trip to Villarreal up next, it is understandable why Liverpool had to rest some of their top stars.
Guardiola too has a richly talented squad and is not adverse to rotating his squad. Neville believes both managers have used their squads well and have shown courage by doing so. The Reds’ usage of Joe Gomez and James Milner in a big game against Newcastle United yesterday is a testament to that fact.
“You hear managers say ‘I’ve got a great squad’, but have you got the guts and the courage to really use that squad in big matches where you need to win?”
Liverpool have recovered well from their difficult 2020/21 campaign and are now back to their best. With several key games yet to come, Klopp’s men appear to be hitting form at the right moment. Hopefully, it will be a May to remember for generations to come.

If not a quadruple, Reds fans would be at least dreaming of a treble. Manchester City’s win against Leeds United sure dampened the mood for LFC fans, but there is a lot of football yet to be played. With the April that we have had, it makes no sense to give up now.
