Liverpool have been given a major transfer boost as Schalke midfielder Max Meyer is not set to hold talks with the German club regarding a contract extension.
The German will be entering the final year of his contract at the end of the season and would be available on a low price in the summer. Schalke are under increasing pressure to keep hold of the midfielder and it appears as though the efforts may go in vain as it looks possible that the 21-year old would move in the summer.
Liverpool were earlier linked with a move for the player, with Everton being the reported competitors for the German’s signature. And now, the move looks like a possibility with the player’s reluctance to discuss a new deal.
This would be a major coup for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as Meyer would be available on the cheap. However, the Reds may have to ward off interest from other clubs in order to land the player.
The prospect of joining Liverpool would surely be an attractive one for the £13.60m rated midfielder as Jurgen Klopp is at the helm. The German manager is known for his ability to nurture young talents and Meyer would surely benefit by joining the Reds.
Schalke Sporting Director Christian Heidel has placed doubt over Meyer’ contract negotiations with his latest comments, stating that it does not make sense to talk about Meyer’s situation as the player hasn’t nailed his place down in the Schalke XI.
The 53-year-old has hinted the Germany international could be off in the summer by explaining talks over a new deal have not begun. Heidel told Bild (h/t talkSPORT):
“At the moment it does not make any sense to think about it. Max has to convince the coach that he belongs in the starting 11.”
Meyer has scored 2 goals and has provided 5 assists this season in 35 appearances, and hasn’t really made it as a regular in the Schalke lineup. Though there is no doubt about the quality talent that he is, the fact that he hasn’t made it to the main Schalke team this season would surely raise questions in his suitors’ minds.
Nevertheless, Liverpool would benefit signing the player as it would be a cheap deal with Meyer’s contract running out in the summer of 2018.
Do you think Meyer would be a good signing for Liverpool?
