Diogo Jota breaks silence on Darwin Nunez being linked with Liverpool transfer
As per Mais Football (h/t the Mirror), Diogo Jota claimed that he could not speak anything on Darwin Nunez and his links to Liverpool, but did go on to praise the player.
Jota started in Portugal’s 4-0 win over Switzerland earlier this week and was speaking to the press ahead of his team’s UEFA Nations League game against the Czech Republic. When quizzed about Nunez’s links with LFC, Jota said:
“I don’t know, I’m focused on the national team. The market will move, I have no idea what the signings could be. I had the opportunity to play against him and he’s a good player, but I can’t say anything else at the moment.”
Jota could come face-to-face with Nunez in November when Portugal take on Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup 2022 Group H fixture. By then, our fans would hope that both the forwards are playing for the same club.
What next for Nunez?
The 25-year-old had a first-hand view of Nunez when the Reds faced SL Benfica in the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League. Nunez even managed to get his name on the scoresheet in both legs but his team ultimately lost on aggregate.
Nunez’s links to Liverpool are well documented at this point. The 22-year-old striker is pursued by Manchester United as well and it remains to be seen if the two clubs have the financial backing to get a deal over the line for him.
The Reds can do with a number nine. It has been ages since we really saw Jurgen Klopp field a natural centre-forward week in, week out.

Perhaps Daniel Sturridge came close to challenging Roberto Firmino for a place, but his injury issues derailed his career at Anfield. Now, we have a chance to have a proper centre-forward of our own- one who will certainly challenge Jota for playing time.
