Transfer News: Everton are interested in former Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum

PSG are willing to let former Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum leave this summer, according to 90min (h/t Liverpool Echo), and our bitter rivals Everton are keeping an eye on the Dutch national’s situation.

The 31-year-old had been tipped to return to Anfield on loan earlier this month. Now other Premier League and other European clubs are interested in acquiring his services.

Apart from Everton, the former Red is also being followed by Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United. The Dutchman is keen on returning to the English top-flight and it remains to be seen where he eventually chooses to join.

At Paris Saint-Germain, the midfielder has largely played a bit-part role, being limited to just 18 starts and barely completing 90 minutes on most occasions. The Toffees’ boss Frank Lampard is said to be attentive to his situation in Paris and a summer move could prove to be a coup for the Toffees.

Wijnaldum back in Merseyside?

Wijnaldim spent five years in Merseyside after his move to Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016. The Dutch national played 237 times for the Reds, scoring 22 goals and assisting 16 more. The 31-year-old was an important player at Anfield and helped the team win some important trophies.

The Dutchman was a critical part of the Reds midfield for a few years alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. However, he ran down his contract at Anfield last season and decided to join the Parisians.

Wijnaldum was an important part of Liverpool’s recent title-winning sides.

Will the Dutch national follow the footsteps of David Burrows and Don Hutchison in playing for Liverpool’s bitter city rivals? It remains to be seen.

If Wijnaldum does end up signing for Everton, it’ll be interesting to see the reception he receives on his return to Anfield and the Dutch nationals speculated return to the Blue half of Merseyside could affect his legacy as a Red.

As of now, the 31-year-old is considered one of the best midfielders of the Klopp era to have put on the Red shirt. He had already courted controversy with his statements since leaving Anfield. Moving to Goodison Park will do him no further favours.
