Alan Hutton tells Jurgen Klopp to replace Sadio Mane with Timo Werner at Liverpool

Former Premier League right-back Alan Hutton spoke to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo) and suggested Timo Werner as a replacement for Sadio Mane at Liverpool.

The former Scottish international believes the Blues forward’s traits fit the way Liverpool seem to play. The 37-year-old feels Wener would thrive in Jurgen Klopp’s side, a viewpoint some of our fans would share, given the German’s speed in attack.

“I think Werner can bring something with his pace and his trickery. I think he could fit into the system.

While Hutton doubts the 26-year-old’s goalscoring abilities, he believes the German would thrive on the Reds’ wings. The German international only has 10 league goals in two full seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The Scottish national calls the Chelsea forward “a problem for defenders” when he plays out wide, just like Mane was. And with the Senegalese gone, Hutton feels there’s a place for the German in the Merseyside club.

“I don’t think Werner’s an out and out number nine to me, I think he misses too many opportunities but he’s a problem out on the wing, he’s a problem for defenders, the way Mane was and obviously with him leaving there’s possibly room.”

Werner wouldn’t start at Liverpool

Even though Mane left the club this summer, Liverpool still have one of the most exciting attacks in the league. With Mohamed Salah as our talisman, we have other competent options up front, who some might say are better than Werner.

Darwin Nunez recently signed for the club and it remains to be seen how the Uruguayan performs at Anfield. But the 23-year-old usually plays as a striker, something Hutton feels Werner is not very good at.

Timo Werner hasn't been at his best since leaving RB Leipzig.

The only possibility for Werner to get into the team would be on the left-hand side of the attack. But Luis Diaz came in January and made that position his own. As a result, the Colombian would be the first name on the team sheet for most fans next season.

Last season the German played 37 games for Chelsea, scoring 11 goals. However, while Chelsea fans appreciate certain qualities the 26-year-old striker possesses, they’ve grown frustrated with his inconsistency.

Liverpool fans would argue that our other forwards, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, are better options than Werner to have in the squad for what they’ve done for the team in recent years. So it wouldn’t make sense for the Reds to go after the German.

In case they did, he wouldn’t be a shabby option to play as a squad player. But with the FIFA World Cup just months away, Werner, however, would surely appreciate regular playing time at club level.
