Robbie Fowler says Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez is ‘a bit of a gamble’
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler calls the signing of Darwin Nunez a gamble but claims it is one worth taking.
Speaking with bettingexpert (h/t Liverpool Echo), the 47-year-old said that the Reds had gone out and spent the money they needed to replace Sadio Mane. The former striker believes that every club takes a risk when they sign a new player.
“Let’s be honest, it probably is a bit of a gamble. Any player going into any club is a bit of a gamble. It is a gamble I’m more than happy to take.”
Fowler thinks that before the Anfield side sign any player, they thoroughly profile the players they’re about to sign. The Merseyside club take a lot of aspects into consideration before going after a player.
The Reds legend is excited to see the Uruguayan. Of the games he did see the 23-year-old play in, Fowler thinks that Nunez would be a handful for opposing defences to handle in the Premier League.
“Whether he is that player who will be the change I don’t know. But time will tell. I’d be confident of him doing well.”
Under Jurgen Klopp, the 47-year-old feels the new addition to the frontline will do well. The Reds legend wanted to see someone like the Uruguayan at the club and said that Nunez’s signing “boils down to a great signing”.
Comparing the Uruguayan’s signing with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Fowler added:
“Manchester City might not rely on Haaland as much as Liverpool will rely on Nunez to score goals. So I can see Nunez being more of a gamble.”
Only time will tell if Nunez is a success at Liverpool
Over the years, Liverpool have signed forwards who have exceeded the expectations of the fans. When Mohamed Salah and Mane first signed for the club, it would’ve been difficult for people to predict them doing as well as they’ve done.
The Reds have been successful in their transfer strategy in the last few years, especially when it comes to our attack. Under Klopp, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are the other players who’ve come into the team and made an immediate impact.
Darwin Nunez comes after an impressive season with Benfica scoring 34 goals in 41 games for the Portuguese side. The 23-year-old has a presence. At 1.87m, the Uruguayan’s profile has been missing in the Reds’ forward line for some years now.

The transition to a different team often requires a bit of adjustment time for a player. It remains to be seen how Nunez goes about his business in the Premier League. But like Fowler, fans will be optimistic about the new signing.
