Transfer News: Barcelona plan biggest release clause in football history for Liverpool and Manchester City target Gavi
According to the Mirror (h/t Manchester Evening News), Barcelona are planning to enter a €1billion release clause in the contract of Gavi, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Manchester City.
The 17-year-old midfielder has risen through the ranks to become a staple in Xavi’s midfield during the last season. His form for the Catalan giants has also made him a regular for Spain’s national team.
And with that rise, his representatives would be thinking about getting him a deal that reflects his importance to Barca. The Catalan club has failed in providing favourable terms to Gavi so far.
But they are open to further discussions and inserting a massive buyout clause in his deal- one that would be the biggest in football history. Manchester City are eager to bring him on board while the Reds are linked as well.
What should LFC do?
For a player who is just 17, his passing ability and reading of the game are beyond his age. He will only get better from here and any team would be lucky to have a player of his ilk in their midfield.
The Reds in particular are in need of young legs in the middle of the park. They have been linked with Jude Bellingham but Borussia Dortmund seem adamant about a €120million price tag.
Gavi’s current deal had a £43million release clause that has now expired and doubled to £86million. It is safe to say that if Barca have their way and the youngster signs a new deal, he becomes virtually unaffordable for any club in the world.

The Reds would be wise to keep an eye on this situation and if a new deal isn’t agreed upon, try their hand at signing the youngster. But if new terms are agreed between him and the Blaugrana, then it’s best to forget about him.
