Fabrizio Romano: Real Madrid entered Darwin Nunez race with Liverpool after new Kylian Mbappe contract

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Real Madrid entered the race to sign Darwin Nunez with Liverpool after Kylian Mbappe signed a new PSG contract.

It is no secret that Los Galacticos wanted Mbappe before the 23-year-old superstar extended his deal at Parc des Princes until 2025. That left them high and dry and in need of a new target.

And Romano claims that they then turned their attention to Nunez, who was still an SL Benfica player at that point. The Reds were, of course, interested in the Uruguayan star during those weeks.

Nunez is now a Liverpool player, with the Reds closing a €100million deal including add-ons this summer. But things could have been different had Madrid pushed harder or if Nunez was swayed by interest from Spain.

“Real Madrid were really interested [in Darwin Nunez] after missing on Kylian Mbappe deal. We all know Kylian Mbappe was one step away from joining Real Madrid but decided to stay at Paris Saint-Germain. One of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid was Darwin Nunez.”

It now adds even more reassurance in the hearts of LFC fans that Nunez is indeed the right choice for the club going forward. When Real Madrid comes calling, it isn’t easy for players to resist the temptation to join them.

Los Blancos remain a giant in Europe after narrowly, and arguably luckily, defeating Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final in May. Karim Benzema isn’t getting any younger and it makes sense that they would have wanted a new forward.

But we’re glad it wasn’t Nunez. The former UD Almeria man is set to battle the likes of Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota for a starting spot down the middle.

It remains to be seen if the 23-year-old would be trusted with a starting role from day 1, but given the cash we’ve spent on him, Jurgen Klopp would be itching to unleash his newest weapon.
