Marco Asensio decides to stay at Real Madrid amidst Liverpool links

According to AS (h/t Liverpool Echo), Marco Asensio has decided to stay at Real Madrid until the end of his contract in 2023 amidst talks of a move to Liverpool.

The Spaniard is now set to fulfil his contract in the Spanish capital and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 26-year-old. Once a fledgling prospect, Asensio has lost steam over the last couple of years.

With many players leaving Los Blancos this summer, especially attacking options, and the failed move for Kylian Mbappe, Asensio believes he can have a more prominent role in the Madrid squad next season.

Asensio has made a name for himself among the Bernabeu crowd since his first full season with the Madrid side in the 2016/17 campaign. Six years on from that moment, the Spaniard’s future is uncertain.

Injuries have taken a toll on the 26-year-old’s body. Asensio’s development has been stalled due to the frequent breaks in the play that he has had to endure. Considered a highly sought-after prospect once, if things remain the same, it seems like the Spanish national will leave Los Blancos as a free agent next year.

Getting into the Liverpool team a challenge

Having played in several attacking positions in his time with the side from the Spanish capital, the left and right wings are positions Asensio has played in the most. The 26-year-old has one of the best left foots in the game and has the ability to shoot accurately from a distance.

While the Spaniard featured 42 times last season under Carlo Ancelloti, it seemed as if the Italian preferred other options. Asensio started 19 games in the league for Madrid.

If the 26-year-old were to come to Liverpool, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota would be waiting in the wings. The competition in the Merseyside squad is incredible.

Asensio is a decent player and Klopp is known to bring the best out of players. But him moving to Anfield is hard to imagine for fans. Game time is not guaranteed in Liverpool. It would be interesting to see if the Spaniard still decides to come to Merseyside if the Reds pursue him.
