Luis Garcia believes Liverpool have found their new James Milner in Fabio Carvalho

Speaking to LFCTV (h/t The Express), Liverpool hero, Luis Garcia has provided a glowing appraisal of Reds’ summer signing Fabio Carvalho.

The 19-year-old arrived at Anfield this summer from Fulham after having led the Cottagers to the Championship title in 2021/22. A versatile attacker with excellent ball control, the youngster has impressed in his two pre-season outings for the club so far.

One of those who have been impressed by the youngster is Garcia. The Spaniard has likened Carvalho to the immortal James Milner, a mainstay during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure on Merseyside so far.

At 36, Milner is not getting any younger and is today a largely rotational player. However, in his heyday, he was a consummate professional who did what the team needed of him.

Capable of playing in several roles, the veteran originally started off as a winger before moving into midfield. Klopp has often deployed him as a full-back and in central midfield to great effect.

Garcia believes Carvalho shows similar traits of versatility and could fulfil several roles in the years to come.

“He’s one of those players who you can play in so many positions. We’ve seen Milner play in midfield, as a striker, almost as a goalkeeper and I think Carvalho is the same. “

Garcia goes on to add that while Carvalho’s ability to play anywhere on the field is a strength, he will be best used in midfield and upwards. A major reason for the Spaniard’s assessment is the goalscoring threat that the 19-year-old brings to the table.

“If you play him in the midfield onwards he’ll be even better because he has that ability to score.”

Carvalho is certainly a talent to look out for and will only develop further under Jurgen Klopp. The youngster is also a silky player who has great ball control and is intelligent enough to observe the movement of others around him. It would appear that the Reds’ scouting department has once again struck gold.

Being compared to Milner is no small praise as the veteran will go down as one of the most beloved players to don the jersey in recent times. Hopefully, Carvalho also goes on not just to build a legacy that rivals the 36-year-old’s at Anfield but also matches his longevity in the game.
