Liverpool stars Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker set to miss crucial Manchester City clash due to injury
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will not feature in this weekend’s Community Shield match against Manchester City, but he’ll be eligible to play in the Premier League opener against Fulham.
The Reds No. 1 missed most of the preseason due to an abdominal injury sustained during the Asia tour, which also required him to take it easy in practice.
Alisson was initially expected to be able to play in the Community Shield match against Manchester City on Saturday, but that is no longer the case.
The Brazilian goalkeeper’s training increased on the last day in Austria, but he won’t feature despite the fact that the game in Leicester is in two days’ time. While speaking to the club’s official website, manager Jurgen Klopp provided an update on the goalkeeper’s fitness by saying:
“No, Alisson and Diogo have no [chance]. Ali trained today more than the day before so he will be definitely available for Fulham, but not for the weekend.”
Adrian has been the only senior goalkeeper available since Caoimhin Kelleher’s absence at the beginning of the month and has started against Crystal Palace, RB Leipzig, and Red Bull Salzburg.
The 29-year-old would have worked hard in training on Thursday at the camp in Austria, but his absence would provide a chance for Adrian to fill in. As a result, Adrian would start in goal for the Reds versus the Citizens, and Harvey Davies, who made the most of his opportunities throughout the preseason, would be expected to serve as his backup.
However, attacker, Diogo Jota’s injury report from Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was less optimistic, with the forward’s recovery from his hamstring injury perhaps taking a much longer time. The Portuguese suffered a hamstring strain that has kept him out of all of Liverpool’s preseason games.
In addition to playing against Strasbourg in a friendly on Sunday night, Liverpool will also be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Caomhin Kelleher, and Calvin Ramsay for the weekend. Kostas Tsimikas is also questionable after missing practice in the middle of the week due to an injury.
Allison’s presence would be a key factor for the Anfield side as he has been ever-reliable in front of goal. The 29-year-old was crucial in Liverpool’s pursuit for a quadruple, which was put to an end as Manchester City edged them out for the Premier League title.
