Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool players were excited to know about Darwin Nunez transfer
Trent-Alexander Arnold has revealed that the players at Liverpool were excited when Darwin Nunez was initially linked with a move to Anfield. The right-back admits that the squad knew the Uruguayan was a “special player”.
Nunez joined the Reds from Benfica after a blistering campaign for the Eagles. The 23-year-old scored 34 goals in all competitions for the Portuguese side last season.
Speaking with Sky Sports (h/t Mirror), Alexander-Arnold knows exactly what to expect from Nunez. Having played against the Uruguayan, the squad had already seen first-hand what the striker was capable of.
“When we played him, we knew he was a special player.”
“He brings goals scores a lot of goals, gets himself in good positions, will work hard and fight for wins – and that’s what we need and what we expect when we bring players in.”
Nunez came up against the renowned Liverpool defence in the Champions League quarter-finals. The 23-year-old was lively in both legs as the Reds beat Benfica 6-4 on aggregate.
Nunez made sure to make a mark against his future side back then. And it paid off as he’s now a part of one of the best teams in the world.
Trent also revealed that the players were looking forward to the arrival of the Uruguayan to the Merseyside. The squad believed the 23-year-old was someone who would help the team going forward.
“That’s the club mentality, and I think he will slot in. Over the years there has been a few signings where, when the club is linked to them, us players get excited and we’re like ‘Yeah, he will work for us’. This was definitely one of them.”
Liverpool have an abundance of attacking options going into the upcoming campaign. Although We’ve lost Sadio Mane, Klopp has enough options available.
Mohamed Salah, who recently signed a new contract, is the Reds’ talisman in the attack. The Egyptian ace will be supported by the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. Youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho are also capable of playing in the attack.
