Dietmar Hamann believes Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp lack an attacking midfielder

Speaking to Genting Casino (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann has given his thoughts on where Jurgen Klopp’s current Reds’ squad is lacking.

The Liverpool boss is slowly yet surely rebuilding the team and has brought in several young talents in the last few windows. The Reds went big on Darwin Nunez earlier this summer while Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho also arrived at Anfield.

This, however, offsets the summer departures of fan favourites Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi. Nevertheless, Klopp is in in possession of a roster that is well equipped to battle across multiple fronts for years to come.

It is however not all rosy as Hamann believes the club lack an attacking midfielder who can score goals. Gone are the days of Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho who used to rack up the numbers for fun.

“The biggest issue with Liverpool is the lack of an attacking midfielder.”

The Liverpool midfield has largely taken on the role of a workhorse under Jurgen Klopp. They function as the engine room of the Reds machine that has world-class attacking and defensive lineups. While goals are a welcome addition from midfield, Hamann does not believe the current crop are capable of making that difference.

“They need to find a few goals from midfield but the way they’re set up now I can’t see them doing that.”

While Hamann does make a valid point, it must be observed that Klopp’s system does not rely on his midfielders scoring goals. The front three at Anfield are geared up in such a way as to optimise the attack and often enhance their scoring records courtesy of it.

More so, the solidity offered by the midfield three often gives Liverpool’s fullbacks- Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to bomb forward with purpose. It makes little sense for the club to change their tactics when what they have is working a charm.

While goals from different sources are always welcome, the lack of an attacking midfielder could be offset by the arrival of Carvalho. The 19-year-old has looked the part and his direct running caused Manchester City problems in the FA Community Shield.

Hamann may not have observed it yet but the Reds rebuild is slowly yet steadily beginning to bear fruit. After all, Jurgen Klopp is no fool.
