Joel Matip gunning for glory with Liverpool this season

According to his interview with Sky Sports, Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip believes that the team can achieve a lot this season in a bid to bring more silverware to Anfield.

The former Cameroon international is confident of his team’s abilities to cope with the demands and is excited to experience more glory. The Reds won two trophies last season – Carabao Cup and FA Cup, before narrowly missing out on the league and losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid in Paris.

They started this campaign with an impressive 3-1 win over league champions Manchester City in the curtain-raiser to lift the Community Shield trophy. While the 2-2 draw against Fulham is a setback, it isn’t the end of the world.

Matip has been one of the underrated performers in the Liverpool squad. His consistency and level of performance have been top for a long time now. He does slip in under the radar playing beside Virgil van Dijk.

Injuries have curtailed his career in Merseyside, but having made 42 appearances in all competitions last season, the 30-year-old has put those woes behind him.

Ibrahima Konate’s injury means that Matip is expected to be the first-choice partner of Van Dijk in central defence. Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips remain his competitors for that position.

The season is still young and there is much to play for. Matip has already won it all with Liverpool. Round two could be in the offing as the Reds look to add more trophies to their collection.
