Glenn Hoddle advises Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold
Glenn Hoddle, former Tottenham Hotspur player and England Manager, had a message for Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold after the right back’s error led to Fulham’s Mitrovic scoring from a free header.
A cross from Kenny Tete aimed at the back post saw Aleksandar Mitrovic beating Trent to the header and clinically placing the ball behind Alisson. The Liverpool full-back should have been more aware and instead left his side to pay the price.
Trent, previously also has been under a lot of scrutiny for not marking his man costing the team on multiple occasions. This includes Vinicius Jr’s game-winner for Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final in May earlier this year.
As quoted by Liverpool Echo, Glen Hoddle suggested Trent to “jump early” to mitigate any advantage Mitrovic could have gained.
“When you are a smaller full-back, and you jump early, then you put the player off, so Mitrovic comes above you, then he has to go through you.”
He added that Trent didn’t open up his body and have a look at Mitrovic who proved to be better in the air than the 23-year-old England international.
Trent’s defensive abilities have always been a topic of discussion, but Liverpool’s style of play helps compensate for his weakness. His style of play demands him to play up further, which naturally leaves space behind, and positionally, he is caught out, which is brought into notice more often than not.
Given that he is still only 23, there is a long career ahead of him and he can certainly put in a shift to improve his game defensively.
