Joao Gomes rejects new Flamengo bid after Liverpool admission
Flamengo star Joao Gomes has rejected a contract offer from Flamengo after recently stating his desire to move to the Premier League and play for his dream club, Liverpool.
That is according to Julio Miguel Neto (h/t Liverpool Echo). He recently confessed his desire to play for Liverpool in the future, as quoted below:
“Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”
Gomes is a midfielder who has represented his nation with the U-20s. Although still just 21 years of age, he has impressive professional experience and has already notched 16 appearances for Flamengo’s first team.
It is common for Brazilians to switch to Anfield and have a successful career ahead as has been seen by the examples of Philippe Coutinho, Fabinho Tavares, Allison Becker, and Roberto Firmino
The Brazilian would hope that his dream materialises and he follows in similar footsteps as his fellow countrymen. Joao Gomes has been a potential target for our fellow derby rivals, Manchester United who sent scouts to watch the player in action.
However, the player’s statement shows his intention and desire to play for Jurgen Klopp’s men. It should be noted that his desire hasn’t, as of now, seen any formal interest from the Reds.
Therefore, it would be wise to say that this is a transfer that has very less chances of fruition this summer unless there are solid claims of the Reds actually wanting to sign him. Nevertheless, it is definitely an intriguing story to keep an eye on for the future.
Liverpool do need a midfielder – that can’t be denied. The ageing James Milner and Jordan Henderson already looked like they could use some competition from world-class players, but Thiago Alcantara’s injury has just underlined the need for depth.
