Matheus Nunes reveals why he chose Wolves despite Liverpool links
Speaking to Wolves TV (h/t Liverpool Echo), midfielder Matheus Nunes reveals why he chose to move to Wolverhampton Wanderers amidst links with a move to Liverpool earlier this summer:
“The coach as well, he really wanted me, and I wanted to play in the Premier League. I think it’s the right next step for me and I’m very happy to be here.”
Matheus Nunes explained the role of the club manager Bruno Lage in persuading him and his willingness to move to the Premier League as two key factors behind his decision.
Wolves have acquired his services for a club-record transfer fee of €50m and he will be joining his international teammates in midfield Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, which will certainly make an adaptation to the league easier for the player.
With the injury crisis, Liverpool could do with a midfielder of his ilk. A dominating presence in the midfield, Nunes has shown his all-around capabilities of a combative box-to-box midfielder, something which we have been missing since the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum.
Liverpool were linked with the midfielder, especially when he rejected a move to West Ham United, paving the way for us to make our move.
It would have been wise to suggest that Nunes could have been a swift acquisition and would have been an excellent addition to the current squad while taking into account the points that would be lost due to a lack of personnel.
Wolves have found a ready-made replacement in case Ruben Neves ends up leaving, with some suggestions that he is on United’s list of potential midfield targets. Getting a replacement early on is always beneficial and gives an added advantage during negotiations.
It would not be wrong to suggest that Wolves would try its best to retain Neves and pair him up with Nunes with Moutinho expected to not have as much playing time as in past seasons. He is 35 years old now, after all.
Jurgen Klopp has always been insistent on finding the ‘right player‘ instead of a panic buy and if the past suggests anything, usually Klopp has found success with this methodology.

Maybe Klopp has a different player in mind and it remains to be seen if we might end pursuing a midfielder before the transfer window closes on 1st September. Fans would remember that we had to wait a bit to get in Virgil van Dijk.
Hopefully, we have a similar world-class signing in mind because it is clear as daylight that the Reds have to start planning for the future in their midfield. Jude Bellingham next year? Who knows.
