Jurrien Timber is confident of getting the better of the Liverpool star Darwin Nunez
Post the draw, Ajax defender Jurrien Timber said he can’t wait to face Liverpool star Darwin Nunez. The Reds signed the Uruguayan from SL Benfica for £85m earlier in the summer window. [spoken to Voetbal International] (h/t Rousing the Kop)
Liverpool and AFC Ajax were drawn in Group A alongside Napoli and Glasgow Rangers during last night’s UCL Draw Event.
The 23-year-old forward played Timber in the UCL for the first time last season with Benfica, easily getting the better of the Dutch centre-back. Nunez’s goal saw Ajax get knocked out of last season’s campaign.
Timber was quick to track back to that goal and hopes to get the better of Nunez this time. The only difference, the Uruguayan will be donning a Liverpool shirt on this occasion.
“I immediately thought of it [Nunez’s goal last season]. The intention is that I will be the boss of him now”
Timber hopes to “boss” the Uruguayan this time around. Benfica’s success last season in the UCL can be attributed to Darwin’s red hot form for them in the competition, which he will hope to replicate for the Reds this season.
The last time the Reds faced Ajax, it was a lonely fixture played behind closed doors in Anfield in December 2020. Curtis Jones got the lone goal in the game, a straight-forward 1-0 win for the Merseysiders.
In terms of the rest of the group, Liverpool have got a familiar face in Napoli and will face Rangers for the first time. The group is not easy and we cannot afford to let our guard down.
On the other hand, in the Premier League, Darwin had the worst possible start as he picked up a red card in just his second appearance in the league, and the first at Anfield. And due to that, he missed the fixture against Manchester United and is also set to miss two more games, AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
