Liverpool’s plans for the redevelopment of the Kirkby training seems to be going smoothly as the club have tabled a planning application to develop housing options at Melwood.
The first-team training ground is set to feature around 160 new homes and the club have applied for planning permissions. Earlier in the year, plans were shared to redevelop Kirkby to bring the first-team and the academy closer – something that manager Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool academy director Axel Inglethorpe want.
The Belfast Telegraph carried a snippet from a statement made by the Reds regarding this move.
“LFC recognises that Melwood has played a significant role in the club’s history but the site is limited in terms of space and is unable to accommodate the club’s ambitions for a new first-class combined training facility.”
Should we be successful and the application gets approved, bids will be invited from housing developers to purchase the site.
Melwood has been a historic setting for a lot of us but times are changing and with the need to work closely with the youth team, Klopp and his side have taken the step of moving their training facilities.
It will be a matter of time before we finalise the move and create the proper setting for the first-team and the academy to work in tandem but there will be a number of benefits when this does take place.
What we do know is that Klopp likes giving chances to young players and has tested our youth products in the League and FA Cups during his time in England.
A few players such as Sheyi Ojo, Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold have displayed maturity and seem set to feature for us next season and there are a number of others who will get chances too.
Klopp has also done his bit to get rid of youth players who won’t be featuring for us, and saw the release of Jordon Ibe, Brad Smith and more recently Andre Wisdom.
There are great expectations from the current management at Liverpool and if they play their cards right, we will have a conveyor belt of great talents over the years. Klopp seems to be in it for the long run and the only way we are going, is up.
