If we were to ask any fan as to what position in our team needs strengthening, it would be a unanimous decision that we need a central defender first and foremost. However, the rumour coming from Italy says we are actually looking to sign a winger rather than a defender from the country.
Calciomercato (h/t Team Talk) claims that we are tracking Federico Chiesa of Fiorentina and will have to battle real hard for the €40million rated attacker. The 19-year-old had a pretty good first season with La Viola as he notched up 4 goals in 34 games.
The report further adds that Inter Milan and Napoli are also interested in the Italy U21 international and that is the reason why Fiorentina have placed the €40million tag on the winger.
Fiorentina still want to keep hold of the player but the youngster is willing to make a move and continue his development. The 19-year-old can play on either wing and also as an attacking midfielder. He does have a great future ahead of him.
Not The Player We Need At All
While Chiesa might be someone that has a bright future ahead of him, in all likeliness, he would move to another Italian side rather than move to a new country, unless we pay him a crazy amount of money. The 19-year-old could provide cover to our forward line but it does seem unlikely that Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah would eventually be replaced by the Italian in our starting line-up.
We have also kept hold of Philippe Coutinho, at least for another season. The 19-year-old is someone who can take place of the Brazilian should he leave us in the future.
Jurgen Klopp does have bigger things on his mind and working on improving the defence should be the first priority. Unless we can keep our attackers and not concede sloppy goals, we won’t finish in the top four, and our Champions League dream might turn into a nightmare if we don’t strengthen our defence significantly.
