Transfer News: Alan Hutton backs Liverpool to win the race for Ajax and Ghana star Mohammed Kudus
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has backed Liverpool to win the race for AFC Ajax and Ghana international Mohammed Kudus.
The attacking midfielder was the star for his country last Monday when he scored a brace in their thrilling 3-2 win over South Korea and kept his side’s hope of qualifying for the next round alive.
Kudus has been linked with a move to Liverpool as of late. It is believed that the Reds are weighing up a move for the 22-year-old in January with rivals Everton also interested in the same.
Now, while speaking to Football Insider, former Villa defender Hutton has backed the Reds to sign the young midfielder and believes the club has an edge over its rivals.
“Liverpool are a huge team with a massive fan base. Going to Anfield is something special. Of course they will have an edge to it and the player will definitely be thinking about it. I think he is a wonderful player.”
“He is definitely a player I think could add something different, make them better. Liverpool are a huge team and they could have the edge on the rest of the teams depending on who they are.”
He’s right. The Reds are one of the biggest teams in the world and manager Jurgen Klopp has shown time and again that he can turn quality players into household names. Take Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk for example.
Klopp also has an ageing midfield to deal with. Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Thiago Alcantara are all beyond 30, while others like Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita have struggled for fitness.
Such an issue has cost us this season, with the Reds sitting sixth on the table with 22 points. A young and energetic midfield is needed and Kudus would make an ideal signing as such.
The midfielder has been in great form for Ajax this season, scoring 10 goals for the Dutch club in 21 appearances so far in all competitions. He has an eye for goal and that is something Klopp could do with at the club.
Also, the player is just 22 and is yet to reach his full potential. The midfielder sees his current contract expire in 2025 (transfermarkt) and with the form he is in, it won’t be surprising if he is offered a new deal from Ajax.
