Quincy Promes

Liverpool are reportedly planning a swoop for highly-rated Dutch international Quincy Promes, in the winter transfer window. According to a Transfermarketweb report, the Reds are eyeing a move for the Spartak Moscow star.

This is not the first time that the Reds are going behind the €20m rated Promes as they tried to sign the Dutch international twice earlier in the winter and summer transfer windows of 2016.

The 25-year-old former Twente star has been pursued by rival Premier League sides as well, with Arsenal and Everton reportedly being interested in the player. Promes is currently contracted with Spartak Moscow until 2021 which means the Russian club has a better leverage in any transfer discussions.

The Dutch star is a regular starter for his national team, having collected 23 caps, and is one of their consistent performers, although Holland is not performing well in the recent years. Promes has consistently delivered for Spartak Moscow and is a vital member of their squad.

The Dutch international regularly plays behind the main striker and has scored 9 goals from 14 matches this season. He has consistently touched double figures for goals in five consecutive seasons now. Overall, he has scored 52 goals in 103 appearances for the Russian side since joining them in 2014.

Promes recently impressed Jurgen Klopp in Spartak’s recent 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Champions League group match. It is reported that the German tactician is weighing a move for the Dutch star.

But, where does he fit in the scheme of things? For all the problems that the Reds are facing this season, attack is not an area where Klopp is having trouble. The likes of Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, Dominic Solanke and the returning Philippe Coutinho provide Klopp with a happy selection headache.

However, there is a school of thought which says that the team has failed to take chances and score goals. Is the lack of finesse in converting chances turning the heat on the misfiring defenders? I know a section of fans would fire on me for talking about the struggles up front when we are scoring many goals.

Is Promes the answer to this inconsistency? Tough to say, because it’s not easy for players from lower leagues to graduate to English Premier League quickly. On stats alone though, Promes is an exciting player.
