Julien Laurens urges Youssoufa Moukoko to stay at Dortmund amidst Liverpool interest

European football expert Julien Laurens while speaking to ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo) has urged Borussia Dortmund and Germany sensation Youssoufa Moukoko to stay at the German club despite interest from top clubs across Europe, including Liverpool.

Moukoko has always been among the talks ever since he started giving impressive performances for the Dortmund reserve teams from a very early age.

The German club has taken great precautions towards his integration into the first team and the patience shown is reaping its virtue as Moukoko seems ready for first-team football. This also explains his inclusion in Hansi Flick’s German national team for the FIFA World Cup.

Moukoko’s current contract with Dortmund is set to expire at the end of the season (Transfermarkt), hence igniting the interest of top clubs who are on red alert and waiting for the right opportunity to price the teenager away from Signal Iduna Park.

Liverpool is one such however Laurens believes that the teenager should reject a big-money move and stay at Dortmund to continue his progress.

“I will expect him to do that (stay at Dortmund). He was getting better. He scored a few good goals just before he went to the World Cup, where he went with Germany, of course.

It would make so much sense. Youssoufa, if you are watching and listening, just stay where you are. This is good for your progression.”

It should be kept in mind that it is Moukoko’s first proper year of playing first-team football for Dortmund. He was kept on the periphery due to the presence of Erling Haaland and has thrived following the Norwegian’s move to Manchester City.

With the Norwegian moving to Manchester City, it opened up space for Moukoko to get the essential game-time and so far, he has not looked out of place.

However, there is a long way to go for the youngster and it does make complete sense for him to stay at Dortmund where he is guaranteed regular minutes instead of warming the bench at a top club.

His time for a big contract will eventually come but currently, he should follow in the pathway of Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and presumably Jude Bellingham who spent years developing their trade at Dortmund before moving on to bigger clubs. The case of Sancho is especially curious given that he has flopped at Manchester United- an indicator perhaps that he made the move too soon.

With the contract extension talks yet to be concluded, even Dortmund would not be wanting to let the prodigy go for free and hence an outcome to the conundrum at hand would be decided soon.

If in case the two parties cannot agree to an extension then we should do everything possible to convince the teenager to come to Anfield and like we have seen with so many players, develop his game under Jurgen Klopp and go up a notch in his level of play.
