Liverpool Dealt With New Headaches As Manchester City Enter The Race For Top Serie A Defender

The Faouzi Ghoulam to Liverpool links just won’t die, despite us signing Andrew Robertson at the start of the season. Robertson, for some reason, has not been getting regular games for us and it is Alberto Moreno who has been our first-choice left-back.

Moreno seemed to be one of the players that was guaranteed a move away from Anfield in the summer but he somehow won Jurgen Klopp’s confidence back and has been decent in his position, to be honest.

Now, the Express claims that we are in the race to sign the Algerian defender as his contract talks with Serie A leaders Napoli has come to a halt. The problem is that his deal is coming to an end at the end of this season and the left-back would be allowed to leave for a free or even discuss terms with a new club in the winter window before joining.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, reportedly wants a release clause of £30m be inserted into his new contract but that is a valuation that does not meet the price point that Napoli have in mind.

While Napoli might be reluctant to sell him, they would have their hands tied should they not get a new deal signed with the 26-year-old. It isn’t a surprise that a number of other clubs are interested in the attack-minded left-back with Manchester City also looking to bring him in.

Pep Guardiola’s men were dealt a major blow when they found out that Benjamin Mendy will be out for majority of the season due to a ligament injury and the Citizens want Ghoulam to cover Mendy’s absence.

The other clubs tracking the situation of the Algerian are Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Juventus but it does seem likely that Ghoulam would join a new team if a decent bid comes in during the winter.

Napoli do have a couple of months to fix things with Ghoulam, a similar situation is brewing with Emre Can and Liverpool too, so we know that feeling.

Ghoulam joining us would give us another quality option in the squad but we already have Moreno and Robertson, so I don’t think we would compete with all those other clubs and sign Ghoulam.
