Italian giants AC Milan to offer Liverpool target Ismael Bennacer fresh contract terms
Liverpool have been dealt a potential blow in their pursuit of AC Milan’s Algerian midfielder Ismael Bennacer. According to Alfredo Pedulla (h/t The Mirror), the seven-time UCL winners are intending on and planning a new contract for the 25-year-old.
Bennacer has impressed one and all with his performances in the Serie A this season, and the Arsenal academy graduate has four goals and eight assists for AC Milan across all competitions in 126 appearances.
The defensive-midfielder could well and truly provide strong competition to Fabinho for a place in the starting XI, and unlike the Brazilian, Bennacer can also play advanced midfield roles as well.
It is always possible that signing a new midfielder, and one like Bennacer could potentially help Liverpool in the sense that he could certainly provide additional depth and competition for places within the squad.
Midfield overhaul for the Reds soon?
Moreover, this could potentially help to improve the overall performance of the team, as players may feel more pressure to perform at a high level in order to retain their place in the starting lineup.
Bennacer’s current deal lasts until 2024 (Transfermarkt) and we cannot even blame Milan as they would also want to fend off interest in Bennacer from other clubs including Liverpool by offering the player a new £3.5m a year deal.
Even after signing Arthur Melo on loan earlier this season, the midfield still looks a bit bleak and further reinforcements could help the Reds in their pursuit of those big titles. Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez are among the other players linked with a move to Anfield, and hopefully this January, we start the midfield overhaul which is long pending.
