We had a disappointing weekend last time out as the Reds were outclassed 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. More than the margin, it is the nature of defensive errors that was a concern for manager Jurgen Klopp. It looked as if Tottenham could score goals at will because the Reds’ defence looked vulnerable all through. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was also at fault for a couple of goals, increasing the fans’ frustration on the Belgian.
No wonder then that the Reds were immediately linked with a world-class goalkeeper. Iker Casillas, formerly of Real Madrid, and currently with FC Porto is probably one of those few ‘keepers that require no introduction.
Recent reports indicate that Liverpool are interested in signing the Spanish legend from Porto in the January transfer window. The report also spoke about interest from Tyneside as Newcastle United are also looking at his situation.
The 36-year-old Casillas had a 25-year association with Real Madrid during which he won multiple trophies – 5 La Liga titles, 3 Champions League crowns apart from numerous domestic titles. Casillas is also a multiple trophy winner with the Spanish national side, having won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Naturally, for a player of that pedigree to be linked to the club will make the fans happy and expectant. Even the Newcastle fans weighed into the debate on social media, but the Liverpool fans were more vocal.
Here are some of the tweets.
No. Develop Karius and Ward.

He’d still better than all of our GKs, I guess. Iker in, Karius & Ward go on loan in a competitive league with a decent club would perfect..

If we wanted a Spanish keeper we should have kept Reina he’d still be number one.

I bet he’s still better than the other 2 and would help with Wards development

Probably a better defender than we’ve got now as well

1000% should be all over this. He’s been good at Porto, plus his experience and organisational skills would be perfect for us at present
