Gabby Agbonlahor says Curtis Jones is not good enough for Liverpool

Rewind to January 2020. In the FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield, Curtis Jones scored a beautiful curler from just outside the box to help push the Reds to the next round of the competition. People would’ve thought that the then 18-year-old would cement himself in the team in the coming years.

But in the present day, the contrast is real and Jones is yet to cement a place for himself in the Liverpool XI. Inconsistent performances and injury concerns are a major part of why the Reds’ Academy Graduate has not been able to get into the starting squad as often as he would hope to.

The central midfielder, in 84 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, has eight goals and ten assists to his name. He would hope to see himself involved in the thick of things more frequently but as of now, one could say that he is not in Jurgen Klopp’s ideal first XI for the Reds.

Gabby Agbonlahor talked about Jones and noted that the 21-year-old is not good enough to play for the Reds. Here is what he said via Liverpool Echo:

“He’s not good enough for me for where Liverpool want to go.”

The other “Scouser in our team”

With the ageing squad the Reds have at their disposal right now, this season presented the perfect opportunity for Curtis to make himself among the manager’s first-choice players but injury issues meant that the player missed a major chunk of the campaign.

Moreover, if Liverpool somehow manage to get their hands on their transfer targets for the summer, Jones will all the more struggle for game-time at the Reds and will not want that scenario. Hence, it is make or break for the player now and must impress with every opportunity thrown his way.

Jones played the entire 90 minutes against Chelsea and would hope to retain his place in the starting XI against Brighton this Sunday.

It is important to remember that Jones is still a young player and it takes time to develop and establish oneself in a top-level team like Liverpool but injuries for sure do not help his rhythm.

He has the potential to cement a place in the starting XI if given the opportunity, and with the right guidance and support from the coaching staff, he could certainly become a valuable asset for the team in the future.
