It is always interesting to watch the Spanish press, especially when it comes to transfers. They make such a frenzied attempt at driving up support for the rumours, that you often feel if there is truth in those! However, more often than not, the Spanish media is not the one to be taken seriously. So, when the latest reports in the Catalan media talk about Emre Can’s future at Liverpool, I believe it should be taken with a pinch of salt.
This is especially because the Catalan media has got nothing to do with the midfielder. Had it been about Philippe Coutinho or anyone else, it may have made sense but Can, who is out of contract at Liverpool next summer, hasn’t been linked with the Catalans in any manner.
According to these reports from Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sport Witness), Can is playing his ‘last few matches’ for Liverpool, having decided to leave the club soon.
It is an open secret that the German international midfielder has refused new terms at Anfield and is free to talk to foreign clubs in January. Juventus were believed to be leading the long list of suitors for the midfielder and Can was even touted to sign a pre-contract agreement with them this winter.
Whether he does it or not is still up in the air as Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool management still hold a bit of hope of getting him to sign an extension. Even if he doesn’t, there is very little chance of Klopp letting his countryman leave in the January transfer window.
So, is the Catalan press right in claiming that Can is nearing the end of his career at Liverpool? It is easy to quash the reports and say that the Catalan media is just pumping up new stories.
However, I can’t completely rule out the threat of seeing Can leave Anfield. With every passing day without Can extending his deal, it is only natural to think that he is playing his final few matches for the Reds.
I would rather like to see Klopp and the team management spend their energy on finding quality replacements.
