Former Liverpool hero John Aldridge has told his old side to swoop in for Alexis Sanchez this January. Sanchez is out of contract in summer and is in no mood to extend his deal at Arsenal. His most likely destination remains Manchester City, where he would reunite with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal may look to sell him for a cut-price fee this month to avoid losing him for free during the summer. However, Liverpool are in terrific form and despite failing to land the Chilean in 2014, Sanchez may have had a change of heart now.
On the other hand, the Reds are set to concede Philipe Coutinho to Barcelona. The Brazilian playmaker is expected to finally complete his switch to the Nou Camp this month.
As per Daily Star, the Reds reportedly held talks with the La Liga giants yesterday and Coutinho believes he has played his last game for the club. With Coutinho all set for his dream move, Aldridge believes they can soften the blow by making a cheeky £40m bid for Sanchez.
“Liverpool made a real statement of intent when they paid £75m to sign Virgil van Dijk – and now they should put in a sneaky £40m offer to try and get Alexis Sanchez out of Arsenal,” Aldridge said, via the Irish Independent.
“The absence of Philippe Coutinho from the Liverpool team yesterday fuelled rumours that he may be on his way to Barcelona sooner than we expected, but that would not be so much of a concern if they could nick a player like Sanchez.
“I’m a big fan of the Chilean forward who turned down a move to Liverpool in favour of joining Arsenal in the summer of 2014, amid suggestions he did not want to live in the north of England.
“Well, if he is keen to join Manchester City now, that stance has clearly changed and maybe he would be tempted by a move to a Liverpool side that he would fit into so easily.”
He added:
“Sanchez is out of contract at Arsenal next summer and while Manchester City appear to be favourites to sign him, Liverpool should try their chances of getting him in this month’s transfer window.
“If Liverpool could grab Sanchez now, it would be a major coup and then Liverpool fans would not be too concerned if Coutinho left for Barcelona.”
We are still not clear whether Coutinho’s proposed move to Barcelona will happen in January or in the summer, but I am very sure he is keen on a move to Spain to play for the Catalan giants.
However, if we could replace him with Sanchez, I would be more than happy as the Chilean is currently one of the top forwards in Europe.
