Former Red Danny Murphy urges Liverpool to end pursuit of Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool see themselves linked with a move for Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, but former Red Danny Murphy believes that his profile isn’t what the club needs.

Jurgen Klopp and his gegenpress style of play at the Reds need midfielders with an engine on them who could run around the length and breadth of the pitch to recover the ball and put the team in a strong position.

Mac Allister is a proper #10 who is technically extremely capable and tends to break lines making runs on either side of the striker and also play intelligent passes in the final third of the pitch. In 30 appearances across all competitions this season, he has ten goals and two assists.

Speaking to talkSPORT via Liverpool ECHO, here is what Murphy had to say on the Mac Allister situation:

“I wouldn’t spend [on Mac Allister]. You would have to spend probably £60m for Mac Allister. I don’t think he is what Liverpool need. He is a super player. I like him a lot. Brilliant technician. Clever footballer.”

“But I think Liverpool need legs if is Klopp is going to continually play the way he does.”

Do we need workhorses or Technicians?

While not everyone will agree with Murphy’s stance on the situation, it is not rocket science to understand why he has this opinion. It is not difficult to see where he’s coming from, but there is absolutely no doubt that he could improve the Reds’ squad two-fold.

Although his work rates are not at desired levels for a team like Liverpool, his technical ability could overshadow that factor and ensure that he has a successful time at Liverpool. But still, we would need players who are ready to size up the field running everywhere as that is the identity of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

In case the Reds decide to opt for a player who could be a pressing monster, there is no need to look beyond the likes of Mason Mount. He also has a good balance of technical ability and could certainly be extremely beneficial for Liverpool.

Whether it is Mac Allister or Mount or anyone for that matter, Liverpool would sit extremely happy to see a new midfielder or two joining the club in the summer as that is certainly the need of the hour at Merseyside.
