Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno has revealed that he is not yet ready to return from an ankle injury. The Spaniard has been out of action since being forced off during the Reds’ 7-0 win over Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on December 6.
Moreno returned to full training a fortnight ago and travelled with the squad for Monday’s surprise 1-0 defeat to Swansea City. Asked for the latest update on his injury, Moreno told Liverpoolfc.com:
“The good news is that it’s getting better each day. The thing about your ankle is that it’s a part of your body you’re always putting your full weight on, that makes it a little bit more complicated.
“I can still feel it’s not quite right but it’s getting better every day and the good thing is that I’m training with the rest of the group. We’re just waiting for this little discomfort to go away and then I’ll be raring to go.”
Although back in training, the 25-year-old has suggested he that he is not yet back to full fitness and is unlikely to make a comeback against West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Asked about his viewpoint of playing against the Baggies, he said:
“I honestly don’t know. It’ll be the manager who decides exactly when I come back but what I do want to make sure of is that I’m fully 100 per cent when I do make my comeback.
“You don’t want to not live up to what you can do when you’re fully fit, so it’s a case of getting that match fitness at 100 per cent so as not to let people down.”
Moreno, who has made 20 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side so far this season, admits that it will be tough to dislodge Andrew Robertson from the first-team. In the Spanish defender’s absence, Robertson – a summer signing from Hull City, has impressed, with a number of eye-catching performances at left-back.
Moreno did appreciate Robertson’s fine form but also issued a stern warning saying that he would be determined to win his place back in the squad.
Moreno added: “You’ve got to be absolutely honest and sincere and say that he’s doing really, really well. He’s put in some great performances and played some great matches.
“It was tough for him at the start of the season, not being involved, I’m sure. It’s also never easy to come into the first team mid-season, so I think he’s coped with that really well.”
“It’s always tough to get your place in the first team at Liverpool Football Club. Obviously, as a result of my injury, [Robertson] has taken his chance and grabbed it with both hands. But I’m training really hard now and determined to do all that I possibly can through hard work to try and win my place back.”
There are a lot many games still left in the season and the return of Moreno from injury would come as a big boost to Klopp.
