The Max Meyer saga seems to be taking a fresh turn with every passing week. While it seemed like Liverpool were leading the race for the 22-year-old German, Bayern Munich too entered the fray and now the Reds will face competition from Arsenal too.
The Daily Star reports that the German is a target for Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal manager wants Meyer to team up with his international teammate Mesut Ozil at the Emirates.
Meyer has been one of the star performers for Schalke this season and will be available on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign. The Bundesliga side have been trying their level best to keep hold of their star but there still is no solution to his contract stalemate.
Schalke’s CEO, Christian Heidel also didn’t suggest that the youngster would stay with the Royal Blues next season and was quoted by the Star as saying:
“Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer. Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.
“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play. Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”
A Race We Should Try To Win
Signing Meyer could be one of the biggest keys to not only improve our performance but also prove our ability to snap up stars. While we would have Naby Keita joining us in the summer, having a player of the quality of Meyer should set us up well for a number of years.
Not only would Meyer be a great replacement for Emre Can, who could join Juventus in the summer, but the German possibly is better in the attacking third and is a box-to-box midfielder too. Meyer can play in a number of positions as well, something which will be of great value for us as we look to keep getting better over the years.
The fact that Arsenal want him should not deter us from moving for him, given we have Jurgen Klopp, who has made a number of stars better during his Liverpool tenure. Arsenal are on the slide down and we have Champions League football to boast about.
Getting Meyer in would be a coup and would not hurt our budget either. He is the kind of player that FSG would want to sign; young, full of potential and just a step away from being world class.
The time is right to seal the deal and hopefully, Klopp will do the same soon.
