Liverpool are interested in Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse
According to Daily Mail (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in bringing Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse to Anfield but are willing to pay half of the Saint’s £50million asking price.
Southampton were relegated from the Premier League this season and many expect the club’s top players to seek a move away. One of the top quality players for Southampton has been freekick maestro Ward-Prowse, who is at too good a level to play in the Championship.
A move to Liverpool would be an obvious step-up for him, even if the Saints were still in the Championship. Although, he may have to settle for a role on the bench here given the quality at our disposal after Alexis Mac Allister’s signing.
Southampton are willing to play the hard game with the England midfielder contracted to the Saints until 2026 but Liverpool will test out their resolve over the coming weeks with a bid.
Liverpool has had good success with players coming from Southampton and making a name for themselves at Anfield. Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana are just examples which show how much the transfers between the clubs have benefitted Liverpool.
There is no doubt that Ward-Prowse could provide a similar impact on the team. Currently 28 and with over 343 appearances in the Premier League, he has the ability to make the shift to a top team.
With the Saints relegated, it does provide a wonderful opportunity to swoop in for their prized assets and it is certainly one transfer to be kept an eye on during the summer transfer window.
Alexis Mac Allister has already been signed but we need at least one more top-quality midfielder to elevate the level of the squad.
