Liverpool midfielder Emre Can’s contract saga continues and there is simply no end to it. The German is out of contract at Liverpool in June and having reached the final six months of his contract, he is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs.
Surprisingly, Can has shown no signs of signing a pre-contract agreement with any clubs. And if he runs down his contract at Liverpool and doesn’t extend his stay, he would become a free agent in the upcoming summer.
The midfielder’s situation at Liverpool has seen a host of European clubs vying for his signature. While Juventus remains the most likely destination, Can could be in splits after understanding Real Madrid are reportedly the latest club to have joined the bandwagon of clubs for his signature.
But at the very moment, Can is not hurrying to make any decision on his future, which could be resolved at the end of the season, report Italian news outlet Tuttosport (h/t The Liverpool Offside).
The German midfielder has contributed 5 goals and 4 assists in 32 competitive appearances for Liverpool this season. He has been a vital figure for Jurgen Klopp, with the manager handing him the armband on a number of occasions during Jordan Henderson’s absence.
Can is still likely to leave Anfield at the end of the season but for now, he only wants to focus on helping Liverpool in their bid for a top-four finish and challenging for the Champions League.
The report adds that the 24-year-old is totally focused on the task this season and wants to continue playing week in and week out, with the World Cup on the horizon. It also coincides with Klopp’s philosophy to have players fully committed to him at least for one season.
Can, as things stand, looks to follow the same pattern for the ongoing season. But following famous Italian agent Federico Pastorello’s words, it appears as if the former Bayern man will ultimately join Juventus.
“Juve tried to sign Emre Can in January, but from what I hear, he is certainly going to be their player next season,” Pastorello was quoted by Football ITALIA.
“The rumours I am party to say that the player wants to join Juventus. I think it’s wise, because Juve are certainly the most international Italian club at the moment.
“Emre Can would be a great addition, as he is a player worth €40m on the market, so getting him for free deserves credit.”
It is high time for Klopp and co. to start making plans for summer and give Can the time to decide on his future.
