Former England national team footballer Owen Hargreaves has given a positive review of Roma goalkeeper Alisson and said that we should do whatever it takes to bring the shot-stopper to Anfield during the summer.
We are widely expected to bring in a new keeper during the summer as both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet have failed to be consistent in their performances this season. Alisson has established himself as one of the top keepers in the Serie A and has also established himself as the first-choice keeper of the Brazil national team, despite facing competition from Manchester City’s Ederson.
We have strongly been linked with a move for Alisson, though reports have suggested that we have been put off by his £70million price tag. This could increase further if Brazil manage to win the 2018 world cup.
“He’s brilliant,” Hargreaves said on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t Daily Star).
“Everybody is raving about Ederson, another Brazilian goalkeeper… these two players are exceptional. Liverpool desperately need a goalkeeper and he would be a record for a goalkeeper again.
“They need a goalkeeper, even though Karius has quietly done quite well, but he’s probably not at the level he needs to be if they want to win a Premier League and a Champions League title.
There is a very strong chance that Simon Mignolet will be leaving us at the end of the season. The Belgian has now been demoted to being the second choice keeper and this will cause him frustration and he will surely be tempted to move at the end of the season.
It is very clear now that we do need to find a new keeper. Alisson is world-class and has all the attributes to succeed in England. Our attack has been superb this season but our defence has been woeful at times and has cost us valuable points in the Premier League as well as in the Champions League.
During the summer, it is essential that we fork out to bolster our backline which will include the goalkeeping department.
