AS Roma and AC Milan wanted Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho before RB Leipzig loan
Liverpool star Fabio Carvalho was attracting interest from AS Roma and AC Milan this summer before joining RB Leipzig on loan, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].
The two Serie A giants were looking to acquire the Portuguese national’s services in the ongoing transfer window. However, in the end, the 20-year-old made his way to Germany on a temporary move.
Jose Mourinho was keen on getting a hold of the midfielder’s signature. The Rossoneri were in the running as well. Premier League rivals Burnley and Eintracht Frankfurt also had him on their radar.
Carvalho made his way through the youth ranks at Fulham before making his way to Liverpool last summer. At the Cottagers, the Portuguese established himself as a quality player and earned a move to the Reds.
Initially, Jurgen Klopp entrusted the youngster with a place in the Anfield side’s engine room. However, over the course of the 2022/23 term, the 20-year-old’s game time started to dwindle.
Subsequently, Carvalho seemed to have fallen out of favour under the German manager at the Merseyside outfit. Last season, the Portuguese made 21 appearances in all competitions for us, scoring three goals.
At Liverpool, the youngster mostly played on the left-hand side of the attack. The 20-year-old’s natural position is in the number 10 role. However, our system under Klopp rarely requires someone in that position.
On the left wing, Luis Diaz has been the gaffer’s preferred option. We also have the likes of Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo who can play in that position. As for the midfield, we have youngsters Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic, who are arguably better suited to playing in the Reds’ engine room.

Carvalho is a promising talent. However, regular game time will evidently be key for the Portuguese to fulfil his potential. It will be interesting to see how the 20-year-old will do at Leipzig.
