Liverpool want to sign a centre-back after Romeo Lavia
Latest transfer speculation surrounding Liverpool discusses how the Reds will likely look to strengthen their defence post the hopeful signing of Romeo Lavia after both clubs agree on a fee for the 19-year-old Belgian midfielder.
Fabrizio Romano, writing via his Daily Briefing on Substack shared what Liverpool are planning to do post hopefully securing their top target in Lavia. Here is what he said:
“Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back this summer but it has to be a very good option,” he says. “They are not “forced” to sign for that position; it’s just in case they find the best opportunity.
“They wanted Levi Colwill but it was always impossible as Chelsea considered him not for sale since day one. Liverpool are currently busy with the Lavia deal, but after that, we will see.”
The pursuit of Romeo Lavia has been a central narrative in Liverpool’s transfer saga. However, the Reds see two of their bids for the player rejected, and that is, in a sense, problematic, as we do not have enough depth, and the season is fast approaching.
Romano’s words underline Jurgen Klopp’s ambition to bolster the club’s defensive ranks with a new centre-back signing. However, it’s clear that this pursuit is guided by a discerning eye for quality.
The club is not hastily rushing into signings; instead, they are in search of a “very good option” as they should. Following Colwill’s contract extension, Liverpool will also have to look for alternatives there. We are not signing a midfielder as well, and that is much more alarming.
While the idea of quality over urgency suits our defensive requirements very well, we can’t say the same about midfield. Low-depth, injury-prone midfield is our reality at the moment.
It is certainly true that we cannot let go of quality just for the sake of signing midfielders, the need of the hour is urgent reinforcements.

Given these multifaceted demands, the transfer focus needs to shift toward midfield acquisitions sooner rather than later. While securing a new centre-back remains important, it’s the midfield that often acts as the fulcrum of success.
