Ronald Araujo rejects lucrative Liverpool offer to stay loyal to Barcelona
Virgil Van Dijk turned 32 this year and for most conventionalists, he should be gradually entering his decline phase. This surely holds true for the Liverpool hierarchy.
The Reds were looking to get their hands on the Barcelona starlet Ronald Araujo who has shown flashes of his huge potential for the Blaugrana.
Liverpool were unable to lure Ronald Araujo away from Barcelona after the defender turned down their lucrative contract offer. The Reds held a strong interest in the Uruguayan centre-back as they aimed to bring in a possible replacement for Van Dijk.
Araujo rejected a big salary package at Liverpool to stay at Barcelona
But according to Spanish outlet Sport, Araujo snubbed a sizable salary package from Liverpool to remain at Camp Nou. The 24-year-old is said to have closed the door on an Anfield switch to fulfil his dream of becoming a Barca legend.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was keen to bring in Araujo’s combination of physicality, pace, and technique. At 6’2″, the Uruguayan fits the imposing profile of a defender that Klopp desires to partner with Virgil Van Dijk.
But despite preparing a substantial offer, Liverpool could not convince Araujo his future lay on Merseyside. The report indicates Araujo identifies deeply with Barcelona’s culture and history. Turning down Liverpool and Chelsea underlines Araujo’s unwavering commitment to the Spanish club.
He even accepted reduced wages on renewing his deal, such was his determination to remain at Camp Nou. That loyalty has Araujo on course to potentially become a Barcelona hero in the years to come.
For Liverpool, missing out on one of Europe’s most promising centre-backs is a blow to their recruitment plans. At just 24, Araujo would have provided the ideal blend of talent and longevity to strengthen the Reds’ backline. But his strong emotional connection to Barcelona proved too substantial for the Reds to overcome.
