Liverpool are planning to battle Arsenal for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking fullback Jeremie Frimpong
Liverpool are ready to battle Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated attacking right-back Jeremie Frimpong. The 22-year-old is a pivotal part of Leverkusen manager and former Liverpool icon Xabi Alonso’s set-up.
Alonso has given Frimpong the freedom to act as one of the main offensive outlets for the team. Leverkusen are currently on top of the Bundesliga table, three points ahead of second-place Bayern Munich. The German club has been undefeated this season in all competitions, thriving in both the attacking and defensive phases.
As said earlier, Frimpong is a key attacking outlet for Alonso’s team and thrives in the attacking wing-back role. The Dutch international has explosive pace and dribbling ability which allows him to carry the ball forward with authority.
The 22-year-old has the agility to wiggle his way through the tight spaces and beat the opposition’s pressing and tackles. He uses intelligence to make well-timed runs from the deep and arrive at the attacking third.
Frimpong’s weakness is his defensive capabilities but that comes down to his emphasis on the attacking aspect of the game. The Dutchman is a good tackler and a hard worker off the ball but needs more improvement in that aspect.
Frimpong has fantastic technique and the ability to make decisive passes and crosses while being a goalscoring threat himself. The Dutchman has made 19 appearances for Leverkusen in all competitions, contributing six goals and nine assists this season.
90min reported that Liverpool and Arsenal observed Frimpong during Sunday’s Bundesliga game between Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. The report further suggests that the 22-year-old has a £35m release clause that expires during the summer of 2024.
Jeremie Frimpong’s release clause is only valid in the summer — he could leave Bayer Leverkusen in July 2024.

The value of the release clause is €40m with favorable payment terms.

The Reds are currently deploying Trent Alexander-Arnold as an inverted fullback on the right side of their defence. The strategy gives Trent the ability to use his creative skills as a deep-lying playmaker when Liverpool is in possession.
However, the formation changes put Liverpool’s biggest goalscoring threat Mohamed Salah in a much wider position. Salah stays in a wide position to stretch the opposition’s defence, going narrow if the right central midfielder drops wide.
Many fans and experts want Trent to play as a new number six for the team. Wataru Endo is the only natural number six while Alexis Mac Allister has played the role more frequently this season.

Frimpong’s signing can open a lot of opportunities for Trent to play as the number-six and use his creativity. The 22-year-old Leverkusen’s right-back’s defensive capabilities are a big question but Trent has faced scrutiny for the same thing. Rest assured, a proper right-back option will allow Liverpool to stretch the opponents conventionally with Trent thriving from the middle.
