BBC Pundit Clinton Morrison defends Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez amid criticism over missing numerous big chances in front of goal
BBC Pundit Clinton Morrison has backed Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez as he continues to receive criticism for missing too many big chances. Nunez has been a pivotal part of Liverpool’s success this season despite struggling to finish easy chances at times.
The 24-year-old has incredible work ethic and ability to get into the dangerous position time after time. However, the Uruguay international has struggled to maintain his composure in front of goals on many occasions.
Nunez has been important for Liverpool nonetheless, making necessary contributions in various areas aside from goals and assists. He is an agent of chaos in the attack line, continuously disrupting the opposition’s defence on and off the ball.
The 24-year-old works hard for his team which suits the counter-pressing approach from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. His pace, and ability to beat defenders and create chances for his teammates separates him from regular poachers.
The Uruguayan forward has already contributed seven goals and seven assists in all competitions from 23 appearances. The contributions might be greater, but they remain respectful considering the level of criticism he has faced.
Speaking to the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast (h/t TBR Football), Morrison defended Nunez over his struggle. He said:
“Fletch, he’s a threat mate, he will be good, he will be good. People are moaning about the chances he’s missing, but I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t getting chances, he’s getting in there and that’s the biggest thing. He’s causing problems and eventually, the goals will start coming for him, he’s building up a little relationship with Salah too.”
The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table but the competition at the top is congested. Liverpool cannot afford to be complacent and therefore Nunez needs to be more composed with his finishing.
On the other hand, the 24-year-old does not deserve the exaggerated criticism that he has faced at times. World-renowned goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland has missed more big chances than Nunez this season.
Darwin Nunez lost the ball and made a perfect tackle to get it back and set up his game-sealing assist to Szoboszlai.

Furthermore, on-form Ollie Watkins closely trails Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea in the statistics for big chances missed. Manchester United’s big-price signing Rasmus Hojlund is yet to open his Premier League account, ranked fifth in big chances missed. Hojlund received praise for his performance despite the torrid stat, showcasing double standards in the media’s assessment of Nunez.

Hopefully, Nunez will take the criticism about his finishing constructively and add more goals to his name. He is already a favourite of Kopites for his hard-work and relentless attitude, rest assured, he will never walk alone.
