Liverpool legend Phil Thompson backs Cody Gakpo to return to the lineup against Arsenal
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has offered his perspective on the upcoming clash against Arsenal, urging Jurgen Klopp to consider starting Cody Gakpo ahead of Darwin Nunez.
Thompson believes that the Dutch forward brings a new and potent threat to the table, making a case for a change in the starting lineup. In our goalless draw against Manchester United in the league, Darwin started upfront alongside Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz. Given the frustrating attacking output in that game, manager Jurgen Klopp made changes to the lineup against West Ham United.
Nunez to the wing with Cody upfront. Resulted in what, you ask? A goal. A very good one at that. Certainly calls for Gakpo to retain his place in the starting XI. He has seven goals and two assists this season, mostly coming on from the bench.
In a recent talkSPORT appearance, Thompson expressed his concerns about Nunez’s current form, suggesting that the Uruguayan striker needs to refocus on his fundamentals, particularly his shooting abilities. Thompson also emphasised the importance of Nunez returning to his roots and rediscovering his knack for taking shots from various positions on the field with Gakpo possibly taking his place.
“He’s [Nunez] forgotten what he’s done best and that’s having a shot from anywhere and he’s not doing the same thing anymore. So, he has to get back to his basics. But I would think Cody Gakpo has to come into the manager’s mind, particularly for the Arsenal game.”
Cody starting against the Gunners?
Gakpo, despite limited starts in the Premier League this season, has showcased his abilities with two goals for Liverpool in addition to contributions in the Europa League and EFL Cup. Thompson sees Gakpo as a viable option, bringing a different dimension to Liverpool’s attack and potentially causing problems for the Arsenal defence.
While acknowledging Nunez’s past contributions and partnerships, Thompson’s suggestion reflects the dynamic nature of football, where form and effectiveness in the current moment take precedence. The call for Gakpo’s inclusion highlights the legendary Liverpool figure’s belief in the Dutch forward’s ability to make an impact when given the opportunity.
As the anticipation builds for the Arsenal clash, Klopp faces the tactical decision of selecting his starting lineup. Thompson’s insights add an intriguing layer to the discussion, leaving Liverpool fans curious to see if Gakpo gets the nod and if the change yields positive results against a formidable opponent like Arsenal who have conceded the least amount of goals in the league this season.
