Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie shares his optimism for fellow Scotsman Ben Doak to fulfil his immense potential in Red
Liverpool icon Gary Gillespie hyped the immense potential of fellow Scotsman Ben Doak, hoping that he would fulfil his talent. Doak underwent surgery on a knee injury in late December, estimated to return just before the end of the season.
The 18-year-old is a promising right-winger with immense potential, and he has featured for the senior team under Jurgen Klopp. Standing at just 1.73 meters, he has a tenacious mindset and a strong will to fight for every ground duel.
The low centre of gravity and close control of the ball helps Doak beat any defender in one-on-one situations. His dribbling skills also help in wiggling out of the congested areas with ease while he keeps his intensity high.
The young Scotsman has a good work rate and has a willingness to help his teammates in the defensive phases. He has a ton of pace and balance alongside deceptive strength to stay on his feet despite facing challenges.
Gillespie provided his opinion (h/t The Herald Scotland) about Doak, hyping his potential to become a first-team regular. He said:
“He’s an exciting player. He’s one of these old-fashioned wingers who will take people on and go at them, and I don’t think there are many wide players like that at this moment in time. That is the thing I think he has in his locker, but unfortunately for him, he has picked up a few injuries, which is only natural for a young player who is developing and growing. From what I have seen so far, he is very exciting, but it is whether he can turn that potential into becoming a player who can be a regular in the Liverpool first team.”
Doak has made six appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season, proving Klopp’s faith in the youngster. However, due to his raw talent and youth, he has a long road ahead before he can perform consistently.
The 18-year-old has shown his skills in patches even when he received a significant amount of game time. There is no better manager than Klopp to teach Doak how to condition his body and mindset to maintain performance.
"You want to win every game and want to do your best every game. Hopefully as a by-product of that we do qualify."

The coaching staff needs to actively monitor the youngster’s game management due to a slight concern about his injuries. Doak would likely receive the same management that Stefen Bajcetic and Kaide Gordon are receiving to prolong their career.
