Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger backs Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger revealed that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso dreams of becoming the Liverpool manager. The ex-United midfielder backed the Spaniard to succeed Jurgen Klopp for the big role at the end of the season.
Klopp announced that he will step away from the managerial post at Liverpool at the end of the season. He stated that he is feeling burnt out and lacks the energy to continue with the managerial role.
The 56-year-old’s announcement opened up a barrage of rumours and speculation over the next Liverpool manager. He leaves behind a huge legacy, achieving great feats with a limited budget and against many insurmountable odds.
Liverpool fans have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions since the announcement from their adored manager. Nevertheless, they understand the decision and believe that his physical and mental well-being is the priority.
The German kept Liverpool competitive in the Premier League, surrounded by super-spending clubs and the daunting task of challenging Manchester City. The blue side of Manchester are facing 115 charges for financial breaches in the past decade, assisting their dominance.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming clash between Bayern and Leverkusen (h/t Liverpool Echo), Schweinsteiger backed Alonso for the Liverpool job. He said:
“I know Xabi and I believe that it is his big dream to coach Liverpool one day. I certainly think it’s possible that he will move to Liverpool in the summer.”
Alonso has been sensational for Leverkusen, guiding them to the top of the Bundesliga with an unbeaten run this season. Leverkusen appointed him as the manager when they started poorly in the 2022-23 season, finding themselves in the relegation zone.

The 42-year-old’s philosophy is parallel with Klopp’s as his team uses high-pressing and counter-pressing football with an attacking mindset. The difference between the two managers is their tactical approach and organizational deployment.
